4 Essential (Dominique Di Piazza) , Plus Loin Music
"It’s been a while since we’ve heard French bass maestro Dominique Di Piazza in a pure modern jazz setting, but he more than makes up for lost time on this burning quartet date. What’s perhaps most pertinent about Di Piazza’s approach is his flexibility as both accompanist and soloist, which even extends to him unleashing some flamenco-style acoustic guitar, such is his technical command and vast harmonic knowledge. It’s the electric bass’ ability to stretch from low mewing almost double bass lines, given that uniquely warm fretless tone thanks top Di Piazza’s patented bridge system that allows a fretted instrument to create long sustained notes, including chords, thanks to wooden saddles on the bridge. It’s also his probing, cajoling approach to interacting with young drummer Yoann Schmidt, pianist Thierry Maillard and violinist Debora Seffer that brings boiling excitement to the surface across this varied set. Opening with a John McLaughlin-esque guitar intro, full of rubato swells, ‘Pierre de Lune’ soon hits its stride with some pirouetting unison lines between piano and bass while Seffer’s violin carves out a plaintive melody on top. But this is a group of supreme dynamic control opening up plenty of spaces during solos, while Di Piazza and Schmidt set about some terse rhythmic interplay. Di Piazza’s solo prowess is little short of awe-inspiring, particularly when soloing on guitar, his luminous lines are fluid and melodic, while his fleet-fingered outings on bass dive into darker territory which for all his speed (and he’s one of the fastest around) his ideas are crystal clear, executed with swashbuckling virtuosity.
Exploring a hybrid of flamenco, French folk and fusion this is an exciting, sometimes explosive, quartet date from a promising new band on a record that’s well worth tracking down."
